insulin pump

The Tandem t:slim G4, which boasts touchscreen navigation and integration with Dexcom G4 sensors, has received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The t:slim G4’s interface closely matches that of Dexcom’s G4 Platinum, so those used to using Dexcom’s continuous glucose monitor (CGM) will be pleased that the display will not take any getting used to.

CGM integration

The CGM integration means that users can benefit from viewing their real-time glucose trend and the amount of insulin on board on the same screen.

The t:slim lives up to its name by being only 0.6 inches thick. The pump’s flat cartridge means that despite being slim and small enough to fit in trouser pockets, it has a 300 unit insulin capacity.

Additional features of the t:slim G4

The t:slim’s touchscreen presents advantages in navigating features, making selecting features more intuitive than needing to scroll through options and press buttons. Additional features include being rechargeable, having a micro-USB port for data transfer and being IPX7 watertight in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes.

Whilst the CGM interface is a strong benefit, it is not essential and the t:slim G4 can be used as a standalone pump.

The t:slim G4 is approved for use for anyone from the age of 12 upwards. Tandem Diabetes Care is taking orders and shipments of the pump are expected in October 2015.
